The United States has reimposed a naval blockade on all Iranian ports following a fourth consecutive night of military strikes against Iran, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
According to CNN, the US military carried out a seven-hour operation from Tuesday night into Wednesday, targeting dozens of military sites near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s coastal regions.
Iranian state media reported that a bottled water production facility near the country’s border with Iraq was damaged during the attacks. Tehran also announced that it has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz after renewed hostilities with the United States resumed last week.
The latest escalation has cast doubt over the fragile ceasefire reached between Washington and Tehran in June after months of conflict.
Speaking to Fox News, US President Donald Trump warned that Iran’s energy infrastructure could be the next target if Tehran refuses to return to negotiations.
“We’re saving the energy facilities for last, but they will be hit eventually,” Trump said. He added that if Iran does not come back to the negotiating table, power plants, bridges, and other critical infrastructure could be targeted as early as next week.
Trump also said US negotiators had conveyed a clear message to Iranian representatives that a new agreement must be reached.
Meanwhile, Iran’s military claimed it launched a drone attack early Wednesday on a US military base in Azraq, Jordan. Reuters reported that the Pentagon had not immediately responded to the claim.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out attacks on weapons and military equipment storage facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
The exchange of attacks marks another sharp escalation in the regional conflict, raising fresh concerns about stability in the Middle East and the security of one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
