Less than a year after helping topple Nepal’s government and propelling reformist leader Balen Shah to power, hundreds of young protesters have returned to the streets, accusing his administration of failing to deliver on its promises.

Ten months ago, a youth-led anti-corruption movement, driven largely by Generation Z, forced the resignation of the then-prime minister. Riding the wave of public anger against corruption and political stagnation, rapper-turned-politician Balen Shah emerged as the face of change, leading his political movement to a landslide election victory.

Shah campaigned on promises of sweeping reforms, greater transparency, cleaner governance and improved public services. His rise was widely seen as a rejection of Nepal’s traditional political establishment and a sign of growing youth influence in the country’s politics.

However, after about 100 days in office, many of the young supporters who once championed his leadership say they have seen little progress toward the reforms they expected. Demonstrators argue that key campaign pledges remain unfulfilled and that visible improvements in governance have yet to materialise.

While political analysts note that just over three months is a short period to assess any new administration, many young Nepalis say their expectations were exceptionally high because Shah presented himself as a transformative leader capable of breaking with decades of political dysfunction.

The growing frustration reflects the challenge facing the new government: translating popular support and anti-establishment rhetoric into tangible reforms while managing the realities of governing. As public patience begins to wear thin, the protests underscore the pressure on Shah to deliver concrete results and maintain the confidence of the generation that helped bring him to power.
