Russia launched its most intense ballistic missile assault on Kyiv since the start of the war, killing at least one person and injuring 15 in a sweeping overnight attack, Ukrainian officials said Sunday.
The hours-long barrage struck six districts across the capital, igniting fires and damaging homes, office buildings, industrial facilities, a dormitory, and vehicles.
Emergency crews rescued residents from burning structures in multiple neighborhoods, including Sviatoshynskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. One fatality was later confirmed.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack as a “brutal terrorist attack,” urging stronger international pressure on Moscow to halt the strikes.
The escalation underscores Ukraine’s growing vulnerability as the war enters its fifth year.
Officials warn that dwindling supplies of Patriot air defence system interceptors—critical for stopping ballistic missiles—are limiting the country’s defensive capabilities.
Beyond Kyiv, attacks spread to other regions: one person was killed in Dnipropetrovsk, while in Zaporizhzhia, a drone strike on a passenger train left its conductor dead and rail cars on fire.
Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted 18 out of 41 missiles launched overnight, reflecting both defensive success and the scale of the attack.
Meanwhile, domestic pressure is mounting. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing criticism and protests following a controversial cabinet reshuffle, including the removal of a key defence figure at a critical moment in the war.
As Kyiv reels from repeated large-scale strikes this month, Ukrainian officials continue to press allies for urgent military support, warning that without stronger air defence, the capital remains exposed to further devastating attacks.
