At least 11 people have been killed and seven others remain missing after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials and local media said on Sunday.
The disaster struck the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, located southwest of Srinagar, the region’s summer capital.
Torrential overnight rain caused rivers to overflow, inundating low-lying areas and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate to safer ground.
In Rajouri, floodwaters submerged the newly built bus terminal at Bela Colony in the early hours, while several vehicles were swept away or left stranded as swollen rivers burst their banks.
Authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies to locate the missing and assist those trapped in affected areas.
However, ongoing rainfall and damaged roads are slowing down rescue efforts.
Weather officials have warned of continued moderate to heavy rainfall across the region until July 23, raising fears of further flooding and landslides.
