Assam flood worsens with 31 deaths

22 July 2026 14:16 Updated: 22 July 2026 14:16

The flood situation in India’s northeastern state of Assam, bordering Bangladesh, has deteriorated significantly. In the past 24 hours, from Monday to Tuesday, 21 more people have died, bringing the total death toll over the past week to 31.

According to a bulletin released on Tuesday by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters have inundated 872 villages across 16 of the state’s 35 districts, affecting more than 564,000 people.

The three worst-hit districts are: Sivasagar – around 359,000 people affected, Charaideo – around 104,000 people affected, and Jorhat – around 50,000 people affected

Rescue operations are being carried out jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Indian Army, and the Fire and Emergency Services. Nearly 10,000 people have taken shelter in 101 relief camps across the flood-affected areas.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he will visit the worst-affected districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat, on Wednesday to assess the situation and oversee relief operations.

The flooding has been triggered by heavy rainfall and flash floods from upstream hills, causing major rivers—including the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, Disang, and Dhansiri—to flow above the danger level.

The disaster has submerged at least 19,100 hectares of agricultural land, while roads and railway tracks remain underwater, severely disrupting transportation. Railway authorities have suspended train services on several routes due to the flooding.
