The death toll from devastating floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam has risen to 50, after 31 more people lost their lives in recent days. Authorities also report that more than a hundred people remain missing.
Over 800,000 people across 16 districts are currently stranded, as floodwaters continue to inundate vast areas. On Wednesday, three additional districts near the Nagaland border were newly submerged, worsening the crisis.
Relentless rainfall has left miles of land underwater, submerging roads, homes, and infrastructure. In Sivasagar district alone, at least 20 people—including two children—have died after being swept away or trapped in rising waters.
Officials have announced a one-time financial assistance of 400,000 rupees for families affected by the disaster.
The situation has been further aggravated by heavy rainfall in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, triggering sudden mountain runoff and swelling rivers beyond danger levels.
Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, but authorities warn that continued rainfall may deepen the humanitarian crisis in the coming days.
