BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the party would decide whom to nominate for the post of president.
“The party will decide who will be nominated for the presidential election,” he told reporters after inaugurating the BRDB divisional office in Rangpur’s Terminal area at around 10:30 am.
He noted that the Speaker of Parliament is currently performing the responsibilities of the president as the office remains vacant.
Responding to a question about educational qualifications for candidates in local government elections, Fakhrul said the Election Commission would make the decision after consulting the Ministry of Local Government.
Asked when the local government elections might be held, he said they are expected to take place towards the end of this year or in early 2027, in line with the government’s earlier indication.
Speaking about agriculture in northern Bangladesh, Fakhrul said the government is committed to making farming more profitable in the region by ensuring adequate budgetary allocations and providing easy-term agricultural loans to marginal farmers.
He also said the government has already waived interest on agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000 within its first four months in office as part of its agricultural development programme.
Among those present at the event were Rangpur Development Authority Chairman Shamsuzzaman Samu, Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Advocate Mahfuzuz Un Nabi Don, the divisional commissioner, the deputy commissioner and other local officials.
