Nagad has handed over BDT 18.57 crore (BDT 185.7 million) to the Bangladesh Post Office as its revenue-sharing contribution for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The symbolic cheque was presented on Wednesday at the General Post Office (GPO) in Dhaka by Nagad Administrator Md. Motachim Billah to Kazi Asadul Islam, Director General of the Bangladesh Post Office, in the presence of Fakir Mahbub Anam, Adviser/Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, ICT, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Addressing the ceremony as the chief guest, Fakir Mahbub Anam urged the Bangladesh Post Office to strengthen oversight of Nagad and accelerate the modernization of its software platform to restore and reinforce public confidence in what he described as the government’s own mobile financial service.
He said the government has already implemented several commitments outlined in its election manifesto and is achieving significant progress through the use of information technology. Digital financial services, he noted, are playing an increasingly important role in generating government revenue. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives to modernize postal services and called on the public not to be influenced by rumors surrounding Nagad, emphasizing the need to maintain healthy competition in the digital financial services market.
Nagad Administrator Md. Motachim Billah said that since Bangladesh Bank appointed an administrator on August 22, 2024, a joint team from the central bank and Nagad has been operating the company without any additional investment. During this period, customers have continued to receive uninterrupted services while both transaction volume and revenue have grown steadily.
He noted that Nagad contributed BDT 14 crore to the Bangladesh Post Office in the previous fiscal year, which has increased to BDT 18.57 crore this year. The platform is currently processing transactions worth approximately BDT 40,000 crore every month. Monthly transaction volume increased from BDT 41,000 crore in January to BDT 44,000 crore in May. He added that government support for upgrading the platform’s legacy software would further improve service quality.
Telecommunications Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi said public confidence in Nagad has increased since government-appointed officials assumed responsibility for its management. She added that revenue has grown significantly under the current administration and that efforts are underway to further modernize the Bangladesh Post Office, which already provides services at costs substantially lower than many international courier operators.
Nagad Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Shamsul Islam Masud said both the company’s revenue and its revenue-sharing contribution to the government have increased consistently over the past two years. He noted that while Nagad’s monthly transaction volume stood at only BDT 2 crore in 2018, it is expected to reach BDT 50,000 crore in the future.
He also said government earnings from VAT and taxes were just BDT 10 lakh in FY2017-18, whereas Nagad has already paid BDT 313 crore in VAT and taxes during the first eleven months of FY2025-26.
Director General of the Bangladesh Post Office Kazi Asadul Islam expressed optimism that with continued support from all stakeholders, the state-owned postal service would become a profitable organization and overcome its long-standing image as a loss-making entity.
The event was also attended by Telecommunications Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi, Nagad Chief Financial Officer Afzal Ahmed, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Shamsul Islam Masud, and other senior officials.
