The government will introduce another pair of intercity trains on the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route within this month, State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid has announced.
He made the remarks on Saturday morning while visiting the Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station in Ramu.
Highlighting the growing demand on the popular tourist route, the minister said the number of passengers travelling to Cox’s Bazar continues to rise steadily. To meet this demand, the government is expanding rail connectivity and improving passenger services.
“With the launch of a new pair of trains, long-standing passenger suffering will ease, and pressure on ticket availability will be significantly reduced,” he said, adding that travel on the route will become more convenient, comfortable and time-efficient.
The minister also revealed plans to hand over the management of the Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station—one of the country’s most modern rail facilities—to a private organisation in a bid to ensure world-class services.
He said the government aims to develop the station not just as a transport hub but as an international-standard, tourism-friendly railway hub.
During the visit, the minister inspected various sections of the station and reviewed passenger services, infrastructure, cleanliness and security arrangements. He also exchanged views with officials and instructed them to ensure the station becomes fully operational quickly with high-quality service standards.
Local Member of Parliament Lutfur Rahman Kajal, senior officials and journalists were present during the visit.
