Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit three flood-affected upazilas in Chattogram on August 9 to distribute relief among victims and hand over newly built houses to families displaced by the recent floods.
The visit will cover Hathazari, Fatikchhari and Banshkhali, areas that were among the worst hit by the devastating floods that inundated large parts of Chattogram district. It will be the Prime Minister’s first official visit to the port city since assuming office.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly confirmed the visit, saying the premier will inspect the rehabilitation efforts and interact with flood-affected residents.
According to officials, the Chattogram district administration has almost completed the construction of government-supported houses for displaced families ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival. A total of 100 newly reconstructed houses will be formally handed over to beneficiaries during the visit.
A temporary helipad is also being prepared to facilitate the Prime Minister’s arrival. From there, he is expected to travel to West Banshkhali, where he will address a brief public gathering, distribute relief materials among flood victims and inaugurate the newly built homes.
The government launched the housing initiative as part of its post-flood rehabilitation programme aimed at helping families who lost their homes during the disaster rebuild their lives.
Chattogram South BNP Convener Idris Mia said party leaders and activists had already begun preparations to welcome the Prime Minister, although the final itinerary had yet to be announced.
“We have not yet received the final programme for the visit. We have been asked to attend a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Gulshan office today. However, we have already completed our organisational preparations to welcome the Prime Minister,” he said.
Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Shorif Uddin said the district administration was making all necessary logistical and security arrangements.
“We are preparing for the visit. Once the official itinerary is finalised, we will complete the remaining arrangements accordingly,” he said.
The recent floods caused extensive damage to homes, roads, croplands and public infrastructure in several upazilas of Chattogram, displacing thousands of families. The government has since been providing emergency relief, rehabilitation assistance and housing support to help affected communities recover.
Officials said the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to review the progress of ongoing rehabilitation efforts and reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting flood-hit families until normalcy is restored.
