Twelve activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, who were reportedly followers of expelled Jamaat leader and lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, have joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira.
They formally joined the BNP at an exchange meeting held on Friday (August 7) evening in the field of Chandipur Model Primary School in Padmapukur Union.
The meeting was organized by the Padmapukur Union BNP and chaired by Md Amzadul Islam Amzad, joint convener of the Shyamnagar Upazila BNP and chairman of Padmapukur Union Parishad. Kamruzzaman, a member of the upazila BNP and former general secretary of Padmapukur Union BNP, moderated the event.
District BNP Joint Convener Md Moniruzzaman attended the meeting as the chief guest. Among the special guests were Upazila BNP Convener Solaiman Kabir, Joint Convener Professor Abu Saeed, former municipal BNP convener and former chairman Sheikh Liakat Ali Babu, and Upazila Jubo Dal Convener Shafiqul Islam Dulu, along with other local leaders.
The 12 individuals formally joined the BNP by accepting floral garlands from Moniruzzaman. Organizers said all of them had previously been associated with expelled Jamaat leader and lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam.
The new BNP members are Kamal Hossain Mintu, Shahadat Hossain, Rafiqul Islam, Abdul Aziz, Jinnur Rahman, Atiar Rahman, Mizanur Rahman Ali, Abdul Majed, Shahajalal, Shahid Gazi, Gafur Gazi and Touhidur Rahman Babu.
Amzadul Islam Amzad said all the new members are residents of different wards of his union. According to him, they had been working for Jamaat and Gazi Nazrul Islam and had also campaigned for Nazrul during the national election.
He said they recently decided to join the BNP after becoming dissatisfied with what they described as Gazi Nazrul Islam’s misconduct. They formally joined the BNP at Friday’s event, he added.
At the meeting, BNP leaders said people from different professions and sections of society are joining the party to strengthen and unite it at the grassroots level. They urged the new members to engage in politics while adhering to the party’s ideology and discipline.
