A woman allegedly attempted to attack former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee with a knife outside her residence in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, according to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The incident reportedly occurred around 6pm near Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat when she was returning after inaugurating a Durga Puja pandal.
According to TMC leaders, the woman, identified as Tannishtha Saha, allegedly approached Banerjee while carrying a knife, hurled abuses and attempted to breach her security cordon. She reportedly claimed to be Banerjee’s niece.
TMC workers allegedly apprehended the woman and handed her over to the police.
Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen subsequently lodged a complaint with the Kalighat police station, raising concerns over the security arrangements for the former chief minister, who has Z-plus security cover.
TMC leaders also alleged that the incident might have been part of a larger conspiracy. However, the allegations have not been independently verified.
