Hakan Fidan has urged Russia and Ukraine to halt attacks in the Black Sea, calling for a temporary ceasefire to protect civilian shipping after a recent surge in strikes.
In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Fidan proposed establishing a mechanism to enforce a “moratorium” on attacks in the region. He warned that the conflict has expanded beyond military targets and is now threatening commercial vessels.
“Initially, ports and military ships were targeted. Now, all commercial shipping is being attacked without distinction,” he said.
Fidan noted that vessels linked to Turkey, including ships flying the Turkish flag, have been among those hit. Earlier in the week, Ankara condemned drone strikes on two Turkish civilian ships in the Black Sea, which left several crew members injured.
The growing risks to maritime traffic have raised concerns over the safety of international trade routes, as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate.
