BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reportedly been selected as the party’s nominee for the presidency.
BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has made the final decision, a BNP source confirmed on Sunday. However, the party has not yet officially announced the decision.
Meanwhile, the BNP has begun formal preparations for the presidential election. The party collected two nomination forms from the Election Commission on Sunday morning.
BNP Vice Chairman and Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the nomination forms from the office of the Returning Officer at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon.
Earlier, Tarique Rahman had been given the responsibility of finalizing the party’s candidate for the presidency. As the BNP holds an absolute majority in Parliament, its nominated candidate is almost certain to become the country’s 23rd president with the support of BNP lawmakers, unless there is a dramatic change in the parliamentary arithmetic.
