Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for the first time on Monday, saying the meeting was very good and that everything appeared positive.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trivedi said he was pleased to meet the prime minister and felt the interaction represented people-to-people ties rather than merely a diplomatic engagement.
“I am very happy. I met the prime minister, and from the moment we met, it did not feel like I was meeting him for the first time. He is very good and very humble,” he said.
Describing the talks as “very good,” Trivedi said India was looking forward to strengthening bilateral ties and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi viewed the relationship positively.
He said differences were natural in a democracy, but the common interest of both countries was to maintain good relations.
“Good relations are a win-win situation. We have historical ties that cannot be changed, and our neighbourhood cannot be changed either. We do not only share a border, we share dreams,” he said.
Trivedi expressed confidence that the two countries would be able to resolve their issues through dialogue.
“I can confidently say there is no issue that we cannot resolve by sitting together,” he said, adding that the Indian prime minister had repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining good relations with Bangladesh.
Asked whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would visit India to attend the BRICS summit, Trivedi replied, “Everything will happen. Everything is positive.”
