A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of actor Ashraful Haque Don, who was arrested in connection with the murder case of popular Bangladeshi film actor Salman Shah.
The court rejected the bail application on Wednesday (August 12), three days after Don was arrested and sent to jail.
Don’s lawyers, including M Faridul Islam and Tarikul Islam Jewel, filed the bail petition before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the application.
Salman Shah’s lawyer Abid Hasan confirmed the matter.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi opposed Don’s bail, while lawyers for the accused argued in favour of granting him bail.
The defence said in the bail petition that there were no specific allegations against Don in the First Information Report (FIR) or the arrest forwarding report. It also claimed that he was not involved in the alleged incident and should therefore be granted bail.
On August 9, Don was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while he was travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. He was reportedly subject to a travel ban in connection with the Salman Shah murder case. The CID took him into custody after receiving information from immigration authorities.
Salman Shah, whose real name was Mohammad Shahriar Emon, died at his residence in Eskaton, Dhaka, on September 6, 1996. His death was initially described as a suicide, but a murder case was later filed.
The long-running case has seen the names of several people emerge during various stages of the investigation.
On October 20, 2025, Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum, maternal uncle of Salman Shah, filed a murder case at Ramna Police Station on behalf of Salman’s mother, Neela Chowdhury, against 11 people, including Samira Haque.
The other accused are Samira Haque’s mother Latifa Haque Lucy, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, actor Ashraful Haque Don, David, Javed, Faruk, Ruby, Abdul Sattar, Saju and Rezvi Ahmed alias Farhad.
