Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum, complainant in the Salman Shah murder case and maternal uncle of the late actor, has received a threat warning him not to “go too far” with the case.
The threat reportedly said Salman Shah’s brother Shahran would be killed in the same manner if the case was pursued further.
Kumkum disclosed the matter to journalists on Wednesday (August 12) at the Dhaka court premises. He also showed reporters a screenshot of the threatening message he received on social media.
Kumkum was present at the hearing of the bail petition of film actor Ashraful Haque Don, an accused in the Salman Shah murder case, before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam.
According to Kumkum, the threat came from a Facebook account named “Shakil Kibria” in the comments section of a Facebook Live hosted by a person named Mamun, who identifies himself as a fan of Salman Shah.
The comment allegedly warned Kumkum against pursuing the circumstances surrounding Salman Shah’s death and threatened to kill Salman’s brother Shahran in the same way if he continued to do so.
“We are preparing to file a general diary (GD) with Ramna Model Police Station over the incident, as the Salman Shah murder case was filed there,” Kumkum said.
Meanwhile, Don’s lawyer Tarikul Islam Jewel sought bail during the hearing, while Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected Don’s bail application.
Mamun, who was present at the court and identified himself as a Salman Shah fan, told journalists that he was conducting a Facebook Live to call for a human chain by Salman Shah’s fans when the death threat appeared in the comments. The comment was later deleted.
He called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the threat and urged authorities to bring all those involved in the case to justice.
Don was arrested last Sunday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and was subsequently sent to jail by a court.
A Dhaka court has ordered investigators to submit the investigation report by August 30 in the murder case filed against 11 people, including Salman Shah’s wife Samira Haque, over allegations that the popular actor was deliberately killed.
The other accused include Samira’s mother Latifa Haque Leo, Ashraful Haque Don, industrialist and former film producer Aziz Mohammad Bhai, David, Javed, Faruk, Ruby of May-Fair Beauty Centre, Abdus Sattar, Saju and Rezvi Ahmed Farhad. Several unidentified people have also been named as accused.
Kumkum filed the case on behalf of Salman Shah’s mother, Neela Chowdhury, on October 20 last year.
Popular actor Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, better known as Salman Shah, died at a flat in Eskaton, Dhaka, on September 6, 1996. Following his death, his father, Kamruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, initially filed an unnatural death case.
Later, alleging that his son had been murdered, he applied on July 24, 1997, to have the case converted into a murder case.
