A herd of elephants came down from the forest onto a nearby road and began staying there at 5 in the evening. Drivers and passengers were alarmed after suddenly encountering the elephants on the road. Following efforts by the Forest Department, the elephants were moved away at around 8 p.m.
The incident occurred on Thursday in the Agarbagan area of the Kaptai-Rangamati-Asambasti Road in Rangamati. Traffic on the road remained suspended for nearly three hours as the elephants occupied the roadway.
According to the Forest Department and local sources, passengers traveling along the road spotted the elephants at around 5 p.m. They then informed the Kaptai Range Office of the Chattogram Hill Tracts South Forest Division.
Forest officials and members of the Elephant Response Team (ERT), led by Kaptai Range Officer Mamunur Rahman, arrived at the scene.
The forest officials initially tried to drive the elephants back into the forest by setting off firecrackers, but the effort proved unsuccessful. They then fired blank shots and sounded vehicle horns to move the animals away.
Eventually, at around 8 p.m., the herd moved back into the forest, after which traffic on the road returned to normal.
