Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan on Saturday said concerted efforts by authorities and residents could transform the capital into a clean, green and modern city.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a special cleanliness drive and rally in Mirpur-2, organised as part of the DNCC’s ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness and public health in the capital.
Safiqul Islam said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had already announced a plan to make Dhaka cleaner and greener and issued directives for its implementation.
“Dhaka city belongs to all of us. Everyone needs to come forward to keep the city clean,” he said, urging residents to work alongside the city corporation rather than relying solely on municipal authorities.
He said the DNCC had launched a number of initiatives in line with the government’s directives, including regular cleanliness and mosquito-control campaigns.
Weekly cleanliness and mosquito-control activities are also being conducted at schools and colleges, he said, with the aim of keeping educational institutions clean, reducing mosquito breeding and helping prevent dengue.
The DNCC administrator urged residents, educational institutions and community organisations to cooperate with the city corporation by maintaining cleanliness in their respective neighbourhoods.
He particularly called on people to stop throwing tissues, plastic containers, bottles and other small items on roads, footpaths and other public spaces.
“Dispose of tissues, small water containers and other waste in designated places instead of throwing them on roads or in public spaces,” he said.
“If everyone does this, there will be no tissues or scattered waste along the roads. We want to give people a beautiful city,” he added.
He said maintaining a clean city required not only regular waste collection and municipal services but also responsible behaviour by residents.
The cleanliness drive was also linked to efforts to improve public health by reducing stagnant water and potential mosquito breeding sites, particularly amid concerns over dengue.
Special guest and woman parliament member Sanjida Islam Tuli urged residents to actively participate in the DNCC’s cleanliness campaign and extend their cooperation to city corporation workers.
She said sustained public participation was essential for ensuring that cleanliness initiatives produced lasting results.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Ashaduzzaman, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Chief Engineer Brig Gen Syed Raquibul Hasan and Chief Health Officer Brig Gen Imru-al-Quais, among others, attended the programme.
The DNCC has been carrying out cleanliness and mosquito-control activities in different areas of the capital as part of its broader efforts to improve waste management, public health and the urban environment.
