Three police officers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, have been withdrawn following allegations that videos of leaders and activists of the banned Awami League were recorded inside the station lockup and later circulated on social media.
The OC, Masudur Rahman, has been attached to the police lines, while Duty Officer Pinky Roy and Assistant Duty Officer Aniva Khatun have also been transferred.
The incident reportedly took place after police arrested four Awami League leaders from the Sultanpur area of Satkhira town on August 15.
They included district Awami League organising secretary Kazi Akhtar Hossain, Kaliganj upazila Awami League member Master Shafiqul Islam, district Tanti League general secretary Alamgir Hossain and former municipal Chhatra League president Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman Shovon.
According to reports, several Awami League activists were allegedly allowed to meet the detainees near the lockup with the OC’s permission.
One of them recorded a video of Alamgir Hossain delivering a statement from inside the lockup. The video was later circulated on social media.
In the video, Alamgir is seen protesting their arrest and chanting political slogans in support of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
However, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) of Satkhira, Mithun Sarker, said the police were unaware of the video-recording incident.
He also described the transfers of the three officers as part of a routine administrative reshuffle.
