BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the country’s 23rd president, securing 255 votes. Voting began shortly after 2pm on Thursday (August 20) in the Parliament Chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Voting in the presidential election ended at 5pm. Independent MP from Brahmanbaria-2 Rumin Farhana was not present during the voting. She later gave her reaction without casting her vote.
Rumin Farhana said, “The presidential election seemed meaningless to me. Because if there is no uncertainty about the outcome, it is not an election. Everyone already knew what the result would be. So why should we call this a vote? Therefore, this was a nomination, not an election.”
Explaining her second reason, Rumin Farhana said, “We have just gone through such a major mass uprising, in which the nation’s sacrifices and many dreams were involved. So why could we not collectively nominate a non-political and acceptable person for the presidency?”
Referring to what she considered the most important reason, Rumin Farhana said BNP invoked Article 70 of the Constitution to pressure lawmakers before the presidential vote. “Yet since 2016, BNP has been loudly talking about its Vision 2030. Now they are saying that if a member votes outside the party line, their membership will be cancelled. Why would I participate in such a farce of an election?” she said.
