Tigers fight to avoid innings defeat

Bangladesh are fighting to avoid an innings defeat against Australia in the second Test in Mackay after being forced to follow on from a huge first-innings deficit.

The Tigers were bowled out for just 64 in their first innings, with Mitchell Starc claiming six wickets for 12 runs.

Australia were subsequently dismissed for 210, giving Bangladesh a 146-run deficit.

Bangladesh’s second innings got off to another disastrous start as Starc struck twice in the third over, dismissing Shadman Islam for one before clean-bowling Mominul Haque with the next delivery.

Tanzid Hasan later fell to Pat Cummins, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 39 for three after 11 overs. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim were at the crease, with the Tigers needing to overcome the 146-run deficit to make Australia bat again.

Earlier, Shoriful Islam produced a career-best performance with the ball, taking seven wickets for 48 runs as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 210.

Cameron Green top-scored for Australia with 67, while Josh Hazlewood was dismissed for six by Taijul Islam.

Bangladesh lead the two-match series 1-0 after their historic nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin.
