Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to travel to the United States next month to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), following visits to Malaysia and China.
According to diplomatic sources, the prime minister is expected to leave for New York on September 21 as part of a nine-day US visit. Preparations for the trip are already underway, including arrangements for US visas for members of his delegation.
The Foreign Ministry has formally notified the US Embassy in Dhaka about the planned visit.
This will be Tarique Rahman’s first address to the UN General Assembly as prime minister.
During his stay in New York, he is expected to attend several events on the sidelines of the UNGA and hold bilateral and multilateral meetings with world leaders.
Following his New York engagements, the prime minister is also expected to travel to San Francisco, where he is scheduled to meet members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman is set to assume the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly on September 8, making Bangladesh’s role particularly significant during this year’s session.
