The Cabinet on Monday congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh delegation for their participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing the country’s engagement under his leadership as a historic and significant occasion.
The congratulatory resolution was adopted at the 22nd Cabinet meeting held at Room 400 of the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to a Cabinet Division press release.
Tarique Rahman addressed the 81st UNGA on September 24, making his maiden speech at the General Assembly. During his visit to New York, he took part in a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral engagements.
The Cabinet resolution noted that his father, late President Ziaur Rahman, addressed the 11th Special Session of the UN General Assembly on August 26, 1980, while his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, addressed the 48th session on October 1, 1993.
It described the representation of Bangladesh at the UN General Assembly by three members of the same family as a unique event in world history.
According to the Cabinet Division, Tarique Rahman took part in 32 international engagements during his four-day programme in New York. Besides addressing the UNGA, he spoke at seven high-level meetings, held bilateral meetings with representatives of 11 countries and met top officials of 10 international organisations, including the United Nations.
His UNGA address covered Bangladesh’s positions on global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, humanitarian issues, economic cooperation and the Rohingya crisis. He also outlined the government’s three-pronged strategy of recovery, restoration and reconstruction.
The Cabinet said Bangladesh’s participation under the Prime Minister’s leadership helped present the government’s commitments and expectations on the global stage and contributed to expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Against this backdrop, the Cabinet extended its heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh delegation for their participation in the 81st UNGA.
