NEW YORK, Sept 24: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for UN initiatives aimed at promoting global peace and humanity, calling for a world based on respect for sovereignty, equality and mutual interests.
Addressing the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, he said Bangladesh wants to see the United Nations at the centre of building a conciliatory world society where countries respect one another’s independence and sovereignty.
“We expect a peaceful world and a humane global society where reason, diplomacy, education and humanity, rather than weapons of mass destruction, become the tools of change,” he said.
The prime minister said conflicts should be resolved through dialogue, diplomatic processes and mutual cooperation.
He stressed that equality, fairness, protection of mutual interests, and respect and dignity should form the basis of bilateral and multilateral relations.
He warned that ongoing conflicts were creating instability, displacing large numbers of people and deepening humanitarian crises.
Wars were also putting pressure on the global economy through energy security concerns, disruptions to energy supplies and rising inflation, he said.
Tarique said shifting development budgets to military spending was an obstacle to world peace. He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to general and complete disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and arms control.
On Palestine, he reiterated Bangladesh’s support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights, including self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for the principles and values of the United Nations in the pursuit of global peace.
