The government wants to bring back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and all others facing cases in Bangladesh and bring them under the law, Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman said on Tuesday (August 25).
He made the remarks in response to a question at a press briefing on the progress of various government activities held at the Press Information Department conference room.
Asked about the government’s efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, back to Bangladesh, Andalib said reports had appeared in Indian media about the conditions communicated by the Bangladesh government.
“To my knowledge, the matter is now being taken towards a resolution through the courts,” he said.
“She went there in one way. Now the Indian government may not want to deal with the matter politically. That is why it appears the issue has been left to the judiciary,” the minister said.
Clarifying the government’s position on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Andalib said the demand was not limited to one individual.
“The government wants every person facing cases in Bangladesh to be brought back to the country,” he said.
He added that fair trials should be ensured for incidents related to the July movement as well as other incidents that took place earlier.
“The government’s objective is to bring those facing allegations and cases back to the country, bring them under the law and ensure justice,” he said.
The briefing was attended by Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, Information State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury, Information Secretary Mahbuba Farzana and Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed.
