The Bangladesh Coast Guard has rescued 12 fishermen after their fishing boat developed an engine failure and became stranded in the deep sea near the Sundarbans.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the rescue on Tuesday.
The fishing vessel, FV Mayer Doa, was carrying the 12 fishermen and fishing around 12 nautical miles south of Dublar Char when its engine suddenly stopped working at around 8pm on Sunday.
The boat drifted in the sea for hours before eventually entering an area with mobile network coverage. At around 6:30pm on Monday, one of the fishermen managed to contact the boat owner and report their situation.
The owner then called the Coast Guard emergency hotline 16111 and requested assistance.
Acting on the distress call, Coast Guard Station Dubla launched a rescue operation and located the disabled vessel in the deep sea. All 12 fishermen were rescued alive along with the boat.
The fishermen were given primary medical treatment following the rescue.
The process of handing over the fishermen and the fishing vessel to the owner was underway, the Coast Guard said.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue rescue operations to ensure the safety of fishermen and others facing emergencies at sea.
