The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 289, while more than 1,500 people remain missing, including over 500 foreign tourists.
Nepal Police released the latest casualty figures on Thursday (August 27), based on information available until 1:30pm local time. Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed that the death toll had reached 289.
Of the bodies recovered so far, 108 were found in Chitwan, 62 in Nawalparasi East, 27 in Dhading, 20 in Gorkha, 17 in Rasuwa, 15 in Nawalparasi West, 12 in Nuwakot and nine in Tanahun.
According to the latest data from Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, at least 826 people remain out of contact. They include local residents, security personnel and domestic and foreign tourists.
Among those unaccounted for are 44 Nepal Army personnel, 28 Nepal Police members and 13 members of the Armed Police Force Nepal.
Authorities also said 644 tourists remain missing, including 517 foreigners and 127 Nepali nationals.
The flash floods that devastated Rasuwa and several other districts on Wednesday sent powerful currents downstream through the Trishuli and Narayani rivers, causing extensive damage to settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Government agencies and security forces are continuing rescue, search and relief operations in the affected areas while authorities collect information on the casualties and those still missing.
