The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 579, while 1,924 people remain missing, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
The disaster struck northern Nepal near the Tibet border on Wednesday after a suspected glacial collapse and avalanche triggered massive torrents of water, mud and debris along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river valleys.
Among those still unaccounted for are 517 foreign nationals and hundreds of workers involved in hydropower projects.
More than 3,700 people have been rescued so far, while thousands of security personnel are involved in search-and-rescue operations.
Rescue operations were briefly disrupted by concerns over a newly formed upstream lake and the risk of further flooding, but authorities later said the immediate threat was manageable.
Teams have since resumed their search for survivors and bodies.
The disaster has affected an estimated 90,000 people, with extensive damage reported to roads, bridges, villages and other infrastructure.
