A 97-year-old woman has been rescued alive after spending hours trapped beneath the rubble of a care facility destroyed by devastating floods in Nepal.
Guna Maya Bohara is now receiving treatment at a hospital, where doctors say she is recovering.
The elderly woman was trapped when the care centre where she lived was reduced to rubble by the floods. Rescue workers spent nearly four hours searching for and freeing her, eventually using an excavator to pull her to safety.
Her relative, Dipak Bohara, rushed to the scene from Kathmandu after learning about the incident.
Speaking to BBC Nepali, Dipak said Guna Maya looked like a “warrior” who had won a battle when rescuers brought her out of the debris.
The disaster struck on Wednesday after a massive collapse of glaciers and rocks in the Himalayan region along the Nepal-Tibet border triggered devastating flash floods.
Powerful torrents of water, ice, mud and rocks swept through settlements, destroying homes, roads and bridges.
Hundreds of people have reportedly died in the floods, while many others remain missing. Rescue operations are continuing amid difficult terrain, damaged roads and the threat of further flooding.
