A fire broke out at the food plaza on the premises of Sealdah railway station in Kolkata on Monday (August 31), triggering panic among passengers. No casualties have been reported.

The incident occurred in the morning, when thick black smoke suddenly engulfed the station area. Three fire engines and police personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

According to eyewitnesses, passengers noticed black smoke coming from the food plaza outside the station. Workers at the food plaza immediately evacuated the premises as the smoke quickly turned into flames.

As several food stalls are located nearby and contain flammable materials, there were concerns that the fire could spread. Passengers alerted the Government Railway Police (GRP), who informed the local fire service.

Fire officials said a preliminary assessment suggested that the blaze may have been caused by a short circuit.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a devastating fire at the Shikha Inn residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata on August 19. Nine people, including seven Bangladeshi tourists, were killed in that fire.
