The traffic division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed a case against the car of Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road.
According to traffic police sources, a flag-bearing Range Rover (Dhaka Metro-Gha-18-2125) was travelling towards the Secretariat on the wrong side of Circuit House Road at around 9:08am on Thursday.
At the same time, the prime minister’s motorcade was proceeding towards the Secretariat through an adjacent road after stopping at a traffic signal.
As soon as the traffic police personnel on duty noticed the violation, they stopped the vehicle. The driver, Arif Hossain, was informed of the traffic violation, and two separate cases were filed under different sections for reckless driving.
Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat was reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.
A total fine of Tk6,000—Tk3,000 for each case—was imposed on the vehicle.
A senior traffic police official said it was the first and unprecedented instance of a minister’s vehicle being prosecuted for driving on the wrong side of the road in Bangladesh.
“Although vehicles belonging to influential people have often been driven on the wrong side of the road to avoid traffic congestion or reach destinations quickly, the law was strictly enforced this time,” the official said.
