National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary and MP Akhter Hossain has said their planned long march to Chattogram will begin on September 5 and that any obstruction to the programme will be resisted.
“We will begin our long march on the 5th. Through this programme, we want to build public opinion. If there is any obstruction to the long march, it will be resisted,” he said.
Akhter made the remarks at a press conference at the NCP’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, on Thursday afternoon.
He accused the government of “utter failure” in addressing the country’s electricity and energy crisis and said the law and order situation remained fragile.
“People are being killed by muggers in broad daylight in front of the Parliament complex,” he said.
Akhter said the government had yet to take effective steps to ensure justice for the genocide.
“We are speaking in Parliament on behalf of the opposition, but the government is not paying heed. Under these circumstances, we have decided to go to the people. We want to highlight the government’s failures to people across the country. We have already completed our divisional rallies,” he said.
At the press conference, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari said they had revised the programme to minimise public inconvenience.
“People in Bangladesh are already suffering from the rising prices of oil, gas, electricity and essential commodities. We have made these arrangements so that fulfilling our demands does not cause further suffering to people or leave ambulances stranded anywhere,” he said.
Regarding the convoy for the long march, Patwari said the initial plan was to have 5,000–6,000 vehicles, but the number had been reduced to around 1,000.
“This programme is aimed at finding a way out of the burden created by the government’s increases in oil, gas and electricity prices,” he said.
NCP Joint Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam and other central leaders were present at the press conference.
