Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has warned that anyone attempting to create unrest by exploiting the crises left behind by the previous authoritarian government will face strict action under the law.
He made the remarks on Saturday evening while addressing a discussion organised at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed chaired the programme.
The prime minister said the government wanted to build a humane state and sustainable democracy where people would have the right to express their views freely.
“However, we have noticed that some individuals and political parties are exploiting the problems left behind by the previous government to spread confusion and create unrest,” he said.
Referring to the previous 16 years of authoritarian rule, Tarique said a political party had gone underground during that period.
He questioned whether elements of the former authoritarian regime were now hiding among them and attempting to fuel unrest.
“The people of the country have given this government the responsibility to run the country. We will uphold democratic norms and practices,” he said.
At the same time, he warned that anyone seeking to create chaos would be dealt with in accordance with existing laws.
“Everyone should remain within their respective limits,” the prime minister said.
Addressing the ongoing energy and power crisis, Tarique acknowledged the difficulties faced by households and industries.
“We inherited a fragile economy and energy system,” he said, apologising to ordinary people and industrial owners suffering from power shortages.
He said the government did not want to make excuses and was implementing a plan to ensure that such crises would not recur in the future.
