A multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, leaving several people feared trapped under the rubble.
The building, reportedly used as a paying guest accommodation, collapsed suddenly at around 1:30pm. A witness said at least 50 students were staying there at the time.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving the report and began searching the rubble for survivors.
A government official told reporters that several people could be trapped inside the building. Police said two people had so far been rescued, but details about the total number of people trapped or injured were not immediately available.
According to a witness, around 50 students were present in the building when it collapsed. However, as it was Sunday, most of them were believed to have been outside or at their homes.
A student at the scene told news agency ANI that he could hear people crying for help from beneath the rubble.
Videos from the scene showed large crowds gathered around the collapsed building as firefighters removed debris in an effort to rescue survivors. A video circulating on social media appeared to show a person trapped beneath a concrete slab, while others tried to move it to rescue him.
At least 12 fire service vehicles were deployed at the scene. An excavator was also being used to remove concrete slabs and girders. Disaster response teams joined firefighters in the rescue operation.
Local BJP lawmaker Anil Sharma, who was at the scene, said two people had been rescued from the collapsed building so far.
“Several students are calling from inside the building. We believe more people may be trapped,” he told reporters, adding that the rescue operation was continuing.
