United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman ahead of the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The meeting, held in New York, focused on Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s preparations to assume the presidency of the 81st UNGA session as president-elect.

On Monday (September 7), Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations congratulated Dr. Khalilur Rahman and wished him success as he prepares to take charge of the 81st session.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is set to begin today, September 8. Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s leadership of the session is being viewed as a significant diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh.

During his tenure as president of the UN’s key global forum, he is expected to play an important role in advancing international peace and security, sustainable development and efforts to address global challenges.

Notably, Dr. Khalilur Rahman will be the second Bangladeshi diplomat to serve as president of the UN General Assembly. The first was former Foreign Minister Humayun Rashid Choudhury, who presided over the 41st session of the UNGA in 1986–87.
