A 28-year-old man was hacked to death by a group of attackers who arrived on four motorcycles in Khulna city on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 8:30pm behind Talukdar Community Centre in the Sonadanga area, said Sonadanga Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Rafiqul Islam.
The victim, Mostakin, son of Shahidul, was a resident of the Alkatra Mill area under Khulna Sadar Police Station. He worked as a technician at an electrical shop in the city.
According to the police, Mostakin was standing near the community centre and using his mobile phone when eight people arrived on four motorcycles and attacked him with sharp weapons. He suffered multiple stab and cut wounds.
Locals rescued him and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have yet to determine the motive or identify those responsible. An investigation is underway.
The latest killing has added to concerns over a recent spate of murders in Khulna. According to the Khulna Metropolitan Police’s Crime Investigation Department, 24 murders have been reported in the city so far this year.
KMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) MM Shakiluzzaman said most of the killings were linked to drug trade control and establishing dominance, adding that police had arrested suspects in most of the cases.
