A young man was hacked to death in broad daylight by unidentified assailants in the Maskanda area of Mymensingh city on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Md Rabbi, 27. The incident took place around 12pm in front of the Maskanda Passport Office.

Rabbi was studying at a private polytechnic college and worked at a computer shop in front of the passport office. He was the son of Mobarak Hossain Bhuttu of Zila Parishad High School Road in the Maskanda area.

According to police and local sources, Rabbi was standing in front of the passport office when several attackers suddenly launched an assault on him. He ran into a nearby shop seeking shelter, but the attackers followed him inside and repeatedly hacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing.

Locals rescued Rabbi in critical condition and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, panic spread across the area, creating a tense situation. Police suspect that a longstanding land dispute may have led to the killing.

Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shibirul Islam said Rabbi’s family had a longstanding land dispute with the family of his neighbour Sabbir.

“Preliminarily, we suspect the killing may have stemmed from the dispute. Witnesses said Sabbir and his brother were involved in the attack,” he said.

The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was in the process of being filed, and police said the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to justice soon.
