Two people were killed in separate incidents in Dhaka’s Jatrabari and Lalbagh areas on Friday.
In Lalbagh, a businessman was allegedly killed by his business associate over a dispute involving Tk3 lakh in outstanding dues.
The body of Sheikh Wasim Roni, 43, was recovered buried under sand from the ground floor of a house on BC Das Street early Friday, three days after he went missing.
In Jatrabari, a 25-year-old man named Rabbi was stabbed to death in the Sontek area. His body was recovered from a road in front of a supermarket on Friday morning.
Police and family members said Roni lived with his family in Shekherdi, Jatrabari, and was involved in the land trading business. He had financial dealings with Masum, an imitation jewellery trader at Ashiq Tower in Chawk Bazar.
Roni’s daughter, Ramisa Akter Sonam, said her father left home around noon on September 8, telling the family that he was going to collect a cheque from Masum against the money he was owed. He did not return and the family could not contact him afterwards.
That evening, Ramisa and her mother went to Masum’s house in Lalbagh looking for Roni. They found Masum’s wife there. Later, when contacted by phone, Masum claimed that he had handed Roni the cheque and did not know where he went afterwards.
Lalbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Md Jamil Hossain said Roni’s family filed a general diary after he went missing. During the investigation, police detained Masum for questioning because of his business dealings with Roni.
Based on information provided by Masum, police later recovered Roni’s body by digging through sand in an open space on the ground floor of the house. Masum was shown arrested and sent to court.
According to the OC, Masum told police that he punched Roni in the head inside the house, causing him to fall to the floor. He then allegedly tied Roni’s hands and legs and strangled him to death before burying the body under sand.
Meanwhile, Rabbi lived with his wife and child in Shonir Akhra and worked with his father at a fish wholesale market in Jatrabari.
Jatrabari police station OC Mohammad Raju Ahmed said police recovered Rabbi’s body from the road in front of a supermarket in the Sontek area after receiving information on Friday morning.
The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
The motive behind Rabbi’s killing and those responsible for the murder were not immediately known. A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) crime scene team was collecting evidence from the spot, while legal proceedings were underway.
