Germany has expressed concern over attacks, threats and harassment against journalists worldwide, calling for their safety to be ensured and perpetrators held accountable.

In a statement on Tuesday, the German Embassy in Dhaka said journalists play an essential role in informing the public, exposing wrongdoing and holding those in power accountable.

However, journalists in different parts of the world, including conflict zones, continue to face violence, threats and intimidation both online and offline.

Germany expressed solidarity with journalists and media workers worldwide, while extending condolences to the families and colleagues of those who have lost their lives while performing their duties.

The statement stressed the need for proper investigations into attacks on journalists and bringing those responsible to justice.

It also said ensuring journalists’ safety is essential to protecting press freedom, freedom of expression and the public’s right to information.
