The two arrested Jubo League men

Two alleged leaders of the Jubo League have been arrested by the Dhaka District North Detective Branch (DB) on suspicion of involvement in a blast at a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Savar.

The suspects were produced before a court on Tuesday, police said.

The explosion occurred at around 9:45pm on Monday at the Eidgah ground near Savar Bus Stand, where the NCP was holding a rally following a procession marking the second anniversary of the July Movement as part of its month-long programme.

At least four people were injured in the blast.

Confirming the arrests, Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parveen said two suspects had been detained over the incident and sent to court on Tuesday.

The detainees were identified as Nurul Islam (52), son of the late Sultan Fakir of Purba Bhakum village in Singair upazila of Manikganj, and Sajib (32), son of Abdul Jalil of Anandapur in Savar Municipality.

According to police, both had been living in Anandapur, Savar. Nurul Islam is a former president of Joymontop Union Chhatra League and former general secretary of the local Jubo League unit in Singair upazila, while Sajib is identified as a Jubo League activist.

Following the incident, NCP Dhaka North District Member Secretary Salamat Ullah Rony filed a case with Savar Model Police Station on Monday night against unidentified individuals.

According to the complaint, miscreants detonated a crude bomb during the NCP’s pre-announced July procession rally at Tarapur field in Savar, leaving three party activists injured. They were later taken to hospital for treatment.

The rally was attended by NCP Convener Nahid Islam and other central leaders. Nahid later went to Savar Model Police Station along with party colleagues Azaharul Islam Tamim and July Movement activist Yunus Ali to file the case.

The committee is headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Jahangir Alam, with Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Rakibul Hasan Ishan and Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Intelligence) Nur Mohammad serving as members.
