A court in Chattogram has granted two days’ remand each for 63 foreign nationals arrested for their alleged involvement in an international online fraud ring.
The Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court passed the order on Tuesday.
The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) had sought seven days’ remand for each of them in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act. After hearing the plea, the court granted two days’ remand for each accused.
Court Police Sub-Inspector Rajib Kanti Dey confirmed the matter, saying the CTU had sought seven days’ remand to interrogate the 63 foreign nationals, but the court granted two days for each.
On the night of September 5, police raided the office of Sted Fast Courier Limited on the ground floor of Bishram Bhaban on Road No. 2 in South Khulshi.
Acting on a tip-off, members of police, the Counter Terrorism Unit, the LIC branch and district police conducted the raid.
During a search of goods booked with the courier service, police seized 118 grams of cocaine from two polythene bags. One bag contained 60 grams and the other 58 grams. The seized cocaine was estimated to be worth Tk 2.36 million.
A case was filed with Khulshi Police Station against Riyadul Ahmed, son of Abdur Rauf of Faridganj in Chandpur, and Md Alomgir of Kalil Box Road in South Keraniganj, Dhaka. Police later arrested SM Mohsin, a resident of the Akbar Shah area of Chattogram, on Saturday.
Following the seizure of the cocaine consignment, detectives launched an investigation using information technology. At one point, investigators from the LIC branch found information about criminal activities taking place at an eight-storey building on Road No. 4 in the Krishnachura Residential Area under Khulshi Police Station.
After collecting intelligence for five days, members of police, the Counter Terrorism Unit, the LIC branch, RAB and various national intelligence agencies conducted a raid on the building.
During the operation, investigators found various devices used for online fraudulent activities at server stations set up on each floor of the building. The devices were seized.
Police arrested 63 foreign nationals during the raid. None of them had passports in their possession.
They were later shown arrested in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act and sent to court, which ordered that they be sent to jail. Following Tuesday’s remand hearing, the court granted two days’ remand for each of the 63 foreign nationals.
