Police faced resistance from local residents while attempting to arrest Faisal Mohammad, a former councillor of Ward 19 of Narayanganj City Corporation, and eventually left the scene without taking him into custody.
The incident took place around 9pm Tuesday in the Madanganj area of Bandar, Narayanganj.
Hundreds of men and women took to the streets and staged a protest after police arrived to arrest Faisal. As the crowd grew, police eventually left the area without arresting him.
Faisal Mohammad is a resident of Madanganj. Police said he is an accused in a case related to the anti-discrimination student movement. A team of Bandar police went to his home and office Tuesday night to arrest him. At the time, Faisal was at his office.
News of the police operation quickly spread, prompting hundreds of local residents to gather on the streets and protest. The number of protesters continued to increase as time passed.
Some local residents said Faisal enjoys popularity in the area. Although he was involved in the politics of the now-banned Awami League, they claimed he had not been involved in any violent or destructive activities. They said local residents took to the streets in anger after learning that police had come to arrest him.
However, Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin said a police team had gone to arrest Faisal Mohammad, but he managed to evade the officers and flee from his office and residence.
