DSHE steps up monitoring of officials’ social media use

18 September 2026 16:49 Updated: 18 September 2026 16:49

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has asked educational institutions to strengthen monitoring of officers’ and employees’ use of Facebook and other social media platforms to ensure compliance with government guidelines.

Institutions have been instructed to report whether their officers and employees have been informed about the government’s social media guidelines and what measures have been taken to monitor their online activities. The information must be submitted by September 25.

The directive was issued in a letter on September 17, referring to the Guidelines on the Use of Social Media in Government Institutions, 2019 (Revised Version) issued by the Cabinet Division and a related DSHE directive issued on August 17.

Under the earlier directive, educational institutions under DSHE were instructed to monitor social media activities of their officers and employees. Any activity found to be contrary to government guidelines, objectionable or misleading content, or posts that could damage an institution’s reputation were to be reported to the relevant monitoring committee’s convener with supporting evidence.

DSHE has now sought details of the steps taken to implement those instructions.

Institutions have been asked to provide information on whether their officers and employees have been briefed on the social media guidelines and to outline the measures taken to monitor their activities and forward relevant information to the monitoring committee.

The information must be sent by September 25 to the designated email address of Professor Tipu Sultan, director of DSHE’s Monitoring and Evaluation Wing.

DSHE said the strengthened monitoring process is intended to ensure greater compliance with government guidelines on social media use among officers and employees under the education administration.
