Trump cuts short Camp David stay, returns to White House

US President Donald Trump unexpectedly cut short his weekend retreat at Camp David and returned to the White House a day earlier than scheduled.

Trump had been expected to return to Washington on Sunday, but he came back on Saturday. The administration did not immediately provide an official reason for the change in plans, according to AFP, as cited by the online edition of Dawn.

The development came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s military coalition confirmed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels had launched a ballistic missile towards the Saudi capital, Riyadh, early Saturday.

The regional security situation was further complicated by a powerful explosion and fire near fuel tanks at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

Shortly afterwards, the US State Department urged American citizens in the region to exercise the highest level of caution.

Against the backdrop of escalating instability in the Middle East, Trump cancelled his planned weekend schedule and returned to Washington earlier than expected.

While no official explanation was given for the early return, analysts believe the worsening regional situation may have prompted the president to shorten his stay at Camp David.
