Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka early Monday for New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 6:05am on a Turkish Airlines flight, accompanied by his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and members of his delegation.
The prime minister is scheduled to deliver his maiden address to the UN General Assembly on September 24. In his speech, he is expected to highlight Bangladesh’s democratic transition, the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation.
The Rohingya crisis, youth and women’s empowerment, education and health, equitable use of modern technology and reform of the multilateral system are also expected to feature in his address.
During his five-day visit, Tarique will attend several high-level meetings and side events, including discussions on climate action and the Rohingya crisis.
He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders and senior representatives of international organisations.
