Bangladesh finally secured its first victory at the Asian Games, defeating South Korea 39-35 in the men’s kabaddi event in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday.
Bangladesh, which had failed to win any of the eight events it competed in on the previous day, produced a hard-fought victory in its opening Group A match at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium in Japan.
The two teams remained closely matched from the start, with Bangladesh taking a narrow 17-16 lead into halftime.
Bangladesh stepped up its attack after the break and gradually increased the pressure on South Korea. The Bangladesh team scored 22 points in the second half, compared with South Korea’s 19, to seal a four-point victory.
All-outs proved decisive in the match. Bangladesh inflicted two all-outs on South Korea to earn four points, while South Korea managed one all-out against Bangladesh for two points.
The teams were evenly matched in defence, with both sides recording one successful super tackle and earning two points each.
Two Bangladesh players received green cards during the match, while neither side received a yellow or red card.
Bangladesh will face Chinese Taipei in its second Group A match on Tuesday.
