The United States, China and South Korea have expressed interest in investing in the construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Bangladesh, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said.
Bangladesh is pursuing plans to expand its LNG import and regasification capacity to address growing domestic gas demand and ease supply shortages affecting industries and other consumers.
The government is considering additional terminal infrastructure, including floating and land-based facilities, to increase its capacity to import LNG and supply natural gas to the national grid.
Bangladesh currently operates two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).
Plans for additional facilities are aimed at strengthening energy security and ensuring a more reliable gas supply.
The involvement of foreign investors could help mobilise investment and technical expertise for the proposed infrastructure.
However, the specific terms, investment commitments and implementation timelines would depend on further discussions and project approvals.
