SATKHIRA: Mariam Khatun, the second wife of former Jamaat leader and MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was buried at her father’s ancestral home in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, early Tuesday.
Mariam was buried at around 12:45 am in Choudoroshi village of Gabura Union. Her body arrived at the family home at around 11:00 pm on Monday.
An ambulance carrying her body left Dhaka in the afternoon and reached the Nildumur ferry terminal at around 10:30 pm. The body was then taken by a motorized boat to her father Masum Billah’s home.
Local mosque imam Nurul Huda led the funeral prayers. Mariam’s father, relatives and around 20 to 25 local worshippers attended the prayers. No members of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s family were seen at the funeral, according to local sources.
Shyamnagar police Sub-Inspector Aniruddha and other police personnel were present during the burial.
Mariam’s body was recovered by police from a designated apartment at the National Parliament Members’ Hostel (NAM Bhaban) in Dhaka on Sunday evening. An autopsy was later conducted at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
