DHAKA: Police told a Dhaka court on Tuesday that Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, provided “important information” during her one-day remand in a case filed over the death of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin, the investigating officer, produced Maksuda before the court after her remand ended and sought an order to keep her in jail custody. Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain granted the application following a hearing.
In the application, the investigating officer said detailed questioning of Maksuda yielded important information related to the case that could assist the investigation.
Maksuda was brought to the court lock-up but was not produced before the magistrate during the hearing. No lawyer appeared on her behalf, and no application was submitted for her.
Mariam, 19, was found hanging inside a flat at Building No. 5 of the National Parliament Members’ Hostel (NAM Bhaban) on September 20. Her father, Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station that night, accusing Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.
Gazi Nazrul was placed on a four-day remand and Maksuda on a one-day remand on Monday. Obaidur remains absconding.
According to the police report, Mariam allegedly died by suicide sometime between 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm on September 21 after locking herself inside a room. Police said Maksuda told investigators that Gazi Nazrul and Mariam married on June 17 at the instigation of Obaidur Rahman.
Gazi Nazrul was elected MP from the Satkhira-4 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election on a Jamaat-e-Islami nomination.
In July, a video showing Gazi Nazrul with a young woman circulated on social media. He later said the woman was his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party on July 22 and sent letters to the Speaker, Election Commission and other relevant authorities seeking action against him.
